About Us
How Much Does That Cost? exists to answer one simple question quickly: roughly what should this cost? Whether you're planning a roof replacement, pricing out a wedding photographer, or just curious what a brake job runs, our goal is to give you a realistic price range in seconds, not a wall of text.
Who writes this
I'm Devan Rutan, the person who built and maintains How Much Does That Cost?. I'm not a licensed contractor, mechanic, or financial advisor — I'm the site's founder and sole writer, and I built this as a fast, honest reference for the kind of "roughly what should this cost?" question I kept finding scattered across forums, outdated blog posts, and contractor marketing pages whenever I needed an answer myself.
Every guide and calculator on this site is something I personally researched, built, and keep updated, using publicly available pricing data, industry cost surveys, and government/trade association sources — see themethodology page for exactly how. If you spot something that looks off, thecontact page reaches me directly, not a support queue.
What we do
We build interactive cost calculators and guides that estimate pricing for home improvement projects, automotive repairs, pet care, technology, weddings, and dozens of other everyday expenses. Every estimate is built from publicly available pricing data, industry cost surveys, and statistical modeling — see ourmethodology page for the full explanation.
What we don't do
We don't claim to have access to proprietary contractor pricing databases, and we don't pretend our estimates are exact quotes. Actual pricing always depends on your specific project, location, and the professional you hire. We built this site to point you in the right direction, not to replace getting real quotes.
How we make money
The site is supported by advertising and, on some guides, affiliate links to relevant products. We disclose both in our advertising disclosure andaffiliate disclosure. Advertising and affiliate relationships never influence the cost estimates themselves.
Questions or corrections
If you spot a cost guide that seems out of date or inaccurate for your area, we'd like to know — reach out through our contact page.
